author of the report has informed us that, given the levels
of cadmium and selenium typically found in the San Luis
Tailings Facility, i.e., cadmium less the .005 mg/1 and
selenium less than or equal to .034 mg/1 (levels which are
less than the current federal primary drinking water
standard for cadmium and the maximum contaminant level goal
for selenium which takes effect on July 30, 1992), it is
their opinion that the levels of cadmium and selenium
detected in each specimen are unrelated to the cadmium and
selenium levels present in the Tailings Facility. Rather, as
the report indicates, environmental sources of these matals
in avian foods are the probable source of the exhibite3
levels in the specimens.
Battle Mountain remains committed to cooperating with .~+our
office in our ongoing efforts to maintain our operatio:~ in a
condition which is safe, environmentally sound and
protective of wildlife.
