This office has been contacted by you to conduct a house
inspection. We have had no other complaints from surrounding
residences. However, County Planner Mike Oasola; Joe Dudash,
Mines and Geology; and Ron Thompson, Basin Resources have
inspected the surrounding area previously. Mr. Joe Chavez had
concerns about unusual cracks developing in his house, but Mr.
Chavez has not, requested a home inspection from me.
This inspection has been conducted by me in my capacity as Las
Animas County Building Inspector on your behalf. My past
experience in building trades include 30 years on-the-job
experience as carpenter, foreman and owner of a construction
company. I have an Applied Science Degree from Trinidad State
Junior College in Industrial Arts.
My recommendation to you is to hire a structural engineer to
conduct an in-depth report of your residence and its
surroundings. The report should also include a possible remedy
to prevent further structural damage to your residence.
My conclusion is that you have had recent earth movement in close
praximit.v to your residence. The downstairs is showing signs of
recent ground movement. This residence, which was built in 1900,
had withstood the close proximity of the river and an extensive
irrigation system without showing structural damage until
recently.
