The shrub reestablishment standard Eor Trapper Mine un range sites A and B
will be a minimum of 400 live stems per acre. Part of this standard will
be accomplished through the establishment of mature shrub clumps as des-
cribed earlier. As [he clumps are approximately 1,400 feet apart, the
clumps will have an area of influence of nearly 46 acres. A minimum of 250
mature shrubs are transplanted in each 1.6 acre shrub clump which will pro-
vide hiding and thermal cover in each 46-acre area of influence. The major
shrub species transplanted are Gambel's Oak, serviceberry, chokecherry, and
snuwberry. However, all shrub species will be counted to meet density
requirements since all species provide some measure of forage and/or cover.
The remainder of the shrub density standard will be met through other
methods. As described in Section 3.6.3.5, the seeding of low shrubs
between [he mature shrub clumps is done. Additionally, aerial or inter-
aeeding of big sagebrush may be performed to increase winter Forage for
wildlife.
Further, direct haul of topsoil From the prestrip area to the regraded
spoils results in sprouting of native perennials. Thus, a random distribu-
tion of various native shrub species can be expected.
Directly hauled topsoil may also be applied to the mature shrub clump
areas. Sprouting of shrubs from freshly removed and replaced topsoil will
add to the density of shrub species within clumps and provide additional
cover and forage.
A determination of having met the shrub density standard will be based un
actual counts of shrub stems within clumps and density transects conducted
the Last year of the 10-year liability period. The point-center-quarter ur
comparable technique will be used [u obtain an average shrub stem density
count on reclaimed lands, A and 8 range sites. Adequacy uE sampling will
be based un the same technique as approved in our permit for adequate
sample size f.or herbaceous cover and production. However, the technique
4-126c
