Empire Eagle Mine Vegetation Final Bond Release Monitoring 2005-2006
1
point. When cover or woody stem density vegetation samples are to be taken,
the production quadrat will be positioned by off-setting it 2 meters to the left of
the sample start point at a right angle to the line or belt transect orientation.
' Production quadrats will be aligned parallel to the line or belt transect direction,
with the 1.0 meter side being parallel to the transect direction. Using this offset
' will minimize interference between cover, production and woody stem density
sampling activities.
' After quadrat placement and prior to clipping all plant species present within the
' sample area will be identified and recorded on the field data sheet. Yearly
production will be measured by harvesting the herbaceous biomass produced
' within the quadrat. Herbaceous growth will be clipped as Gose to ground level
as practical.
A single herbaceous production sample will be harvested and processed for each
quadrat. Herbaceous production samples will include the following plant life
' forms when present in the quadrat annual graminoids, annual forts, biennial
forts, perennial graminoids and perennial (orbs. Cacti, cushion plants,
' succulents, subshrubs, shrubs, trees, designated noxious and targeted weeds
species, and plant species formally listed under the Endangered Species Act will
not be inGuded in herbaceous production samples.
Samples will be oven dried for at least 24 hours using standard accepted
methods. Following oven drying, each herbaceous production sample will be
weighed and its weight recorded to the nearest 0.1 gram. Production sample
information will be reported by life form and total production for each sample
point. Trace samples will be reported as 0.1 grams when they occur.
Woody Stem Density
Belt transacts will be used to measure woody stem density. Shrub/subshrub
composition and density will be measured using belt transects that are 100
' Habitat Management, Inc. 12 6/7/2006
