Empire Eagle Mine Vegetation Finai Bond Release Monitoring 2005-2006
Vegetation Cover
Point-intercept line-transects will be used to measure vegetation cover. Point-
intercept line-transects will begin at the designated sample start point and will be
oriented as previously described above. Aline-transect 10-meters in length will
be used to collect cover point intercepts. Point intercept cover measurements
will be observed and recorded at 10 centimeter intervals along the sample line-
transect from 0.1 meters to 10 meters. Intercept points will be taken along and
parallel to the line-transect orientation. A laser bar with the beams set 10
centimeters apart will be used to take cover readings, with the beams being
projected perpendicularly to the ground surface. Along each line-transect a total
of 100 point-intercepts will be recorded in this fashion. Each point-intercept will
be assigned an absolute cover value of 1 %.
Cover measurements will record "first-hit" point-intercepts by either: plant species
(living vegetation), litter, rock, or bare ground. Litter will inGude all organic
material that is dead. Rodc fragments will be recorded when partite size is
equal to or greater than one square centimeter (non-erodible particle size).
Total vegetative cover will be reported in absolute percentages from first-hit
point-intercept data for each line-transect sample point. Relative vegetation
cover percentages will be calculated using the vegetation cover data subset for
each line-transect sample point.
Herbaceous Production
Herbaceous production will be collected using standard harvesting methods. A
rectangular quadrat of 0.5 square meters (i.e., dimensions of 1.0 meter by 0.5
meters) will be used to collect herbaceous production samples. Production
sample quadrats will be aligned at the sample point using one of two methods.
When no other vegetation samples (i.e., cover or woody stem density) are to be
taken at a sample start point, the quadrat will be centered over the sample start
Habitat Management, Inc. 11 6/7/2006
