Surface water monitoring sites 1, 2, 5 and 6 are sampled monthly, from March
through October for flow, temperature, pH and conductivity. The 45 parameters
listed in Table 7-47 are sampled three times between March and September, in
the same manner as described above for NPDES monitoring sites.
Surface water monitoring sites 10, 11, 12 and 13 are sampled on a monthly
basis from May through September for the parameters listed on Table 7-47.
Samples are not taken of these sites if no flow exists at the confluences of
Bond Creek and Cow Camp Creek with Fish Creek.
Native Springs
Four native springs exist within the permit area: Springs #1, 2, 3 and 5.
Spring #4 is outside the permit area and is no longer sampled. These native
springs are sampled during May of each year for the parameters listed in
Table 7-47.
Spoil Springs
Nine spoil springs exist in the permit area. Eight of these spoil springs
(#2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9) are sampled annually after the soil has dried
out following snow melt and are monitored for flow, temperature, pH and
conductivity.
Spoil spring #1 is sampled bi-weekly from March to June for flow, temperature,
pH and conductivity and three times between March and September for the
parameters listed in Table 7.47 (as described above for NPDES monitoring
sites).
Stock Tanks
Stock tanks have been constructed in drainages on reclaimed spoils in both the
Wadge and Wolf Creek mining areas. The tanks are temporary to assist in
erosion control, as well as provide water for wildlife and livestock. Six
stock tanks are monitored for both the presence of water and quality of
water. These stock tanks are numbered T2, T5, T6, T7, T12 and T25. These
ponds are sampled on a monthly basis between June and September for the
parameters listed in Table 7-47. Sampling of the stock tanks will continue
through the 1992 water year, at which time Peabody Coal Company will compile
the data collected to determine what effect, if any, the stock tanks have on
the prevailing hydrologic balance. Peabody Coal Company will submit the
results of the study to the Division, and the requirement for future
monitoring will be assessed if Peabody Coal Company proposes to discontinue
monitoring at that time.
The applicant will conduct monitoring of surface water in a manner approved by
the Division. The monitoring plan was submitted under 2.05.6(3)(b)(iv) and
includes the following: (4.05.13(2)).
-18-
