Y
4.2.6.3 Methods Used to Determine Revegetation Success
The varied history of the Eagle Mine Complex dictates that a
variety of methods be used to determine revegetation success. The
mining history has been detailed in previous sections, however, each of
the areas, and the success evaluation criteria for each, will be
presented in the following paragraphs.
Due to time constraints, the alternate methods for determining
revegetation success for portions of the No. 5 portal area (face-up,
pole barn area, warehouse area, bathhouse area, coal storage area) and
the 5A portal have not been developed. The SCS has been contacted to
provide the beginning success criteria and it is expected that Empire
Energy v~ill work with the I1LRD and SCS in developing success criteria
for the above areas. The success criteria will be forwarded to the MLRD
and the OSF1 within the next 90 days.
In order to determine if the revegetation of the sites is
proceeding in an acceptable fashion, the sites will be inspected every
two to three years to determine revegetation success. A visual
~~,~~ ~ inspection will be made to determine cover, production and woody species
~'~ ~ density when appropriate. These estimations will be compared to the
baseline data to determine the status of the revegetated site. The
comparison will be evaluated in reference to the elapsed bond period and
the appropriate steps taken. If it is seen that the vegetation is not
becoming established or the site is dominated by weedy species after
passage of three years, then the site or portions of it will be reseeded
and fertilized as necessary. It is understood that augmented seeding
will initiate a new ten-year bond period for the reseeded sites.
(REV. 11/9/83) IV-93
