Plains Sharp-Tailed Grouse Study
3.0 RESULTS
Castle Rock Ouarry - eZM
All southeast facing slopes that could be potential Sharp-tailed Grouse lek sites were searched
on foot for grouse feathers, droppings or remains. No Sharp-tailed Grouse sign or remains
were observed. The' historical sighting locations on the Castle Rock Quarry property were
searched for Sharp-tailed Grouse sign or remains. None were observed. Along the listening
station route (16 locations) bird sounds were identified. No Sharp-tailed Grouse calls were
heard. At each listening station a 360° area was searched for grouse with binoculars. No
Sharp-tailed Grouse were observed.
In addition to the four-day early morning surveys conducted from May 13-16, 1995, two
other days were spent performing a general reconnaissance of the property. No sign, calls or
individual Sharp-tailed Grouse were observed. '
The four most common birds identified through song and sight were the vesper sparrow,
western meadowlark, mountain bluebird and song sparrow. Approximately ten total species
were identified through their song or through sightings. These results are shown during
Table 1.
McClain Pit -American Geological Services. Inc.
No grouse were heard or seen during the survey. Meadowlarks and vesper sparrows were
the most prevalent bird species heard throughout the survey. Numerous other bird species
were heard or observed throughout the survey (see Table 2). The biologists experienced
steady traffic at the four stations located along Highway 83 on Tuesdays; however, had little
to no traffic on Sundays. The rest of the stations were reasonably free of noise interference
on either day.
eupuceriog-euviroumeutal Management, lnc. 6
July 12, 1991
