d) Battle Mountain has committed to be a good neighbor and
help the community.
Battle Mountain has told residents in public meetings
that they are willing to help. Some of the contributions
that Battle Mountain has already made to the community
are listed below.
1. We supplied the money to improve and upgrade the
County Road that serves not only the mine but Rito
Seco Park and the Forbes subdivision.
2. Battle Mountain donated 90 acres of land along the
Cerro Ditch Road to the County.
3. Battle Mountain has loaned heavy equipment to the
County Road Department to assist in road
improvements.
4. We paid for a new engine, tires and paint for the
Costilla County Sheriff Department vehic:le.
5. Battle Mountain has made numerous monetary
donations to help in town projects such as the sign
at the entrance to town and the honoring of town
veterans.
6. Eight Battle Mountain employees cleaned up around
the Parish and Stations of the Cross for one full
day on company time prior to the Governcr's visit.
In all, Battle Mountain spent approximately $150,000 in
Costilla County in 1989, not including any salaries.
They are currently averaging a total of $25,000 or more
in monthly spending with Costilla County merchants. All
of these projects and donations have occurred before
Battle Mountain has made a penny in earnings from the
mine.
d) Battle Mountain will help local tourist trade by offering
mine tours.
In the last four months the San Luis Project has had
approximately 800 visitors. Mining sites have a special
draw as a tourist attraction. Towns such as Cripple
Creek, Colorado and Lead, South Dakota successfully made
use of their mining sites to promote tourism and draw
tourists to the area. We will contribute to the tourism
in the San Luis Valley by offering mine tours including
a gallery for viewing gold pours. We believe the mine
will be one of the largest tourist attractions in the
county.
