Battle Mountain was unable to do so. The State required that
Battle Mountain give them the amount that had been calculated
($3.3 million) and the State holds that money until they are
satisfied with the site clean up. Battle Mountain does not
get the money back until we have completed the clean up and
reclamation in accordance with the State's standards.
13. What about the large ponds and tanks of cyanide left at the
site when Battle Mountain is finished?
Cyanide is removed during the process and large ponds or tanks
of cyanide will not remain when the mining stops. Near the
end of the mining and processing Battle Mountain will stop
adding water to replace the water lost to evaporation thereby
reducing water levels at the site. When the project is
finished any cyanide remaining in the watex• will be
neutralized and the remaining water will be evaporated so that
the site can be reclaimed. Chemicals and large ponds and
tanks will be removed.
14. What can the land be used for once it is cleaned up?
The clean up will restore the land to better grazinc~ land than
now exists. The current project area has been heavily
overgrazed and as a result the area is mostly sagebrush with
few grasses. Battle Mountain's plans for clean up include
reseeding the entire area with grasses. The grasses have been
specially picked to include grasses that existed in abundance
before the site was overgrazed and grasses that will survive
in the dry climate present at the site.
15. Will Battle Mountain abandon the site once they are finished
mining?
The site will be managed by Battle Mountain until the State
says that it has been properly cleaned up even if Battle
Mountain is not mining any gold. We have put ttogether a
detailed plan for cleaning up the site and will he putting
parts of the plan into action throughout the life of the mine.
We will remain at the site until the State has determined that
the site is adequately cleaned up according to State Laws.
Remember, the mine site land is all privately owned and it is
in our best interest to return the land to product:lvity.
16. What other benefits will the project bring to Costil.La County?
a) The mine will create new jobs for Costil:la County
residents.
When Battle Mountain first came to the San Luis Valley we
committed to hire 70$ of our people from CostilAa County.
Presently our work force is made up of over 85$ local
residents and once the mining actually begins, additional
people will be hired. In addition, we are getting local
