Messrs. Crane and Banta
September 11, 19d^~tan.
Page 6 .~L~ J
points were done at the intersection and at each line end point (7 m. from
intersection point). Tree species, distance from sample point, diameter
at breast height of individual or clump, and estimated tree height were
recorded.
RESULTS
Ground Observations:
Ground observations for this study began April 9, 1980. A total of
144 were observed between April 9th and April 23rd (Map B). Most obser-
vations were on south-facing slopes below sandstone bluffs along Middle
and Foidel Creeks.
A total of 525 elk were observed between April 28th and May 16th (Map
B). Most observations were from the Eckman Park area southwest of
Pinnacle Peak (432 sightings). The remaining sightings were from the
north slope of Rattlesnake Butte (62 sightings) and below the south-facing
bluff near EFC headquarters (31 sightings).
A total of 394 elk were observed between May 19th and June 6th. All
observations were from observation post 111 and observation routes L-1 and
L-2 (Map B).
A total of 488 elk were observed between June 9th and June 28th (Map
B). Most of these observations occurred along the established observation
routes (Table 1). Thirty-seven calves were observed during this period
(Map C).
Aerial Observations:
Five aerial elk surveys were conducted between April 2 and June 26,
1980. All observations were made during prime morning observation hours
(0530-0630). Flight time totalled 8.75 hours with 4.75 hours of actual
observation time. Observation time averaged one hour per flight.
Aerial observation surveys were begun on April 2, 1980. One hundred
seventy elk were sighted. The majority of these elk were located on
southerly facing slopes which were free of snow cover (Map D). The second
survey, May 30th, revealed 262 elk scattered over the study area. Seven
elk were observed in the area between Fish Creek and Dunkley Flat Tops
(Map E). Elk sightings during the June 9th flight numbered 129 with no
elk observed between Fish Creek and Dunkley Flat Tops (Map F). On June
16th, 165 elk were observed in the study area. Six of these sightings
were calves observed moving with groups of cows. All calf sightings were
in the Eckman Park and Middle Creek areas. Seven elk were sighted between
Fish Creek and Dunkley Flat Tops (Map G). The final aerial survey, flown
June 26th, revealed 98 elk in the study area, including eight calves. Six
of these calves were in the Eckman Park and Middle Creek areas and two
were located in [he Rattlesnake Butte area. Eighty-six elk, including 12
calves, were seen in the area between Fish Creek and Dunkley Flat Tops
(Map H).
