this rate to be roughly 23 million seeds per acre, or approximately
500 pure live seeds per square foot. This extraordinary rate is
necessary under the severe high elevation conditions discu:ased ear-
lier. Grass requires two to three years before it becomes firmly
established. Excellent first season grass growth at the mane site
produces shoots about one inch tall.
9.6 PLANTING TIMES
Generally, seeding and planting activities are limited to
the months of May through September. However, because of f.`requent bad
weather, May and September are not dependable months at they mine site.
Grass is seeded from about mid-May through July at Henderson West,
usually stopped during August, and resumed during the latter half of
September. Grass is seeded the entire summer at the mine site because
of the very short season. Tree seedlings are planted fiom the latter
part of May through mid-July. All transplanting must take place prior
to bud-break, i.e. June 1 at the mine site and the middle of May at
the mill site.
9.7 TREES, SHRUBS
Lodgepole pine and Engelmann spruce are the principal tree
species planted at the mine site. A 2:1 ratio of lodgepole to Engel-
mann spruce is planted because lodgepole are better adapted to open
sites. Spruce are included to promote relatively rapid plait succes-
Sion on the disturbed sites.
It is expected that bristle cone pine and limber Fine will
be commercially available in quantity by the time comprehen:;ive
9-3
