Technical Revision to
Henderson Mine Permit Ido. 77-342
Page 4
8. Page 6-6,~first paragraph, original permit, change,
"Vegetation is analyzed for F, Mo and Cu every third yeas- in
conjunction with chemical analyses of soils (discussed later)",
to read, "Vegetation will be analyzed periodically for F, Mo
and Cu in conjunction with chemical analysis of soils
(discussed later)."
Discussion: Chemical analyses of vegetation were
performed during 1976 and 1979 and it appeared that, as
with IR photography, a longer interval was warranted.
9. Page 6-12, original permit, change the third sentence
under Soils Monitoring which states, "Soil samples from
selected locations surrounding the mill and tailing area (with
a control) will continue to be collected (Figure 6-3) every
third year and analyzed for pH, conductivity, organic matter,
Pd03, P, K, A1, Fe, Mn, Cu, F, As, Cd, Pb, Mo, and CN." to read,
"Soil samples from selected locations surrounding the mill and
tailing area (with a control) will be collected (Figure 6-3) as
necessary and analyzed for pH, conductivity, organic matter,
NO , P, K, A1, Fe, Mn, Cu, F, As, Cd, Pb, Mo, and CN." In
ad~ition, delete the fifth sentence which states, "If
significant differences are not evident after five samplings
(15 years), the sampling frequency might be reduced."
Discussion: As with the vegetation monitoring, baseline
data were collected in 1976 and a follow-up study was
conducted in 1979 after three years of production. ,gain,
comparison of the two samplings produced no overall
significant differences and it was felt that a three-year
sampling cycle was too frequent. We do not expect tl~e
tailing to affect the soils or the vegetation of the
surrounding area. The Climax Mine has been in operation
for approximately 65 years and no observable detrimental
effects are evident on the vegetation surrounding thfa
Climax tailing ponds.
10. Page 6-29, original permit, the first sentence at thc~ top
of the page states, "Large mammals are monitored semiannu~illy
in the Williams Fork Valley by Dr. Fred Glover." Please change
to read, "Large mammal utilization of the general area
surrounding the mill is monitored periodically."
Discussion: As with other aspects of the environment:, we
do not wish to commit to a rigid monitoring schedule, nor
do we wish to commit to a specific consultant in
perpetuity. Weather permitting, we have performed
semiannual large mammal monitoring near the mill since
1974, but did not originally intend that the statement on
monitoring frequency be construed as a commitment.
