Coal Melbane Drainage Project - Pane4 76-24 Wet! E!k Mine • PoBe 3-13
populations within the boundaries of DAU D-20, which includes Game Management Unit 53, are
estimated at 4,848. The current CDOW population objective for this DAU is 7,000 deer. Several
studies are underway to determine limiting factors for deer populations. Likely factors include
declining habitat condition and trend, and fawn mortality. Fawn mortality is due to a combination of
poor nutrition and infectious disease.
Hairy woodpeckers are common year-round residents of the Forest. They are found in aspen,
ponderosa pine, Douglas-Fir, spruce-fir and riparian habitats. The Mountain Hairy Woodpecker (P. v.
mnn}itula) subspecies which inhabit this area occur predominandy in conifers, although there is
substantial use of aspen forests and deciduous foothill streams. They favor aspen for their nest holes,
and dig a new hole every yeaz. Nest holes may be used by a number of other montane breeding birds,
many of which cannot excavate nest holes,
3.2.1.2 Threatened, Endangered, and Sensitive Species
The US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) maintains a list of federally designated threatened,
endangered, proposed, and candidate species which may occur or be affected by actions occurring in
Colorado. Similarly, the USFS has designated the following list of sensitive species of concern that
may occur or be affected by management activities on National Forest lands within the analysis area.
The analysis area is within Gunnison County, Colorado.
uv/nl...v.GtG/EA/O.ye r/I/0}EI USFI
y+laz.n
EnvironmentalArrerrment
