Specifically, we urge the Division and Board to impose additional
ground. and surface water monitoring both. up and down gradient (for the aquifer) and
up and down stream (for the Rico Seco) from the west pit. 'This i, especially needed
since the company admits that the bac3dilled t»atr;ial will become "saturated' as
ground wales infiltrates the pit is the wining years ages dewatering cads. The fact that
stormwater will flow across the bacltfilled material (instead of amuad it) is also
troubling. While BMG's proposal mentions "existing" wells in the area, it does not
say exactly where the wells ate or whether tttete is surface water monitoring in the Rito
Seto near the pit. This monitoring should be c]atified and expaadod.
Although the company is quick to highlight batch tests that thry say point to
little chance for sulfide reactivity, it admits that some sample tests "showed a slight
potential for sad production" (Page D-10). Due to this uncettainry, and the fact that
testing on past waste xoclc samples has not been completed.(D-10), these additional
monitoring systems ere warrartted.
