In order to clean up the groundwater systems (and the Rito Seco surface system), BMRI
constructed a water processing plant and drilled several more monitoring wells m and around the
West pit. Groundwater is currently being pumped from the West pit and the alluvial aquifer, sent
through the processing plant, then discharged (pursuant to their approved CDPS discharge
permit) into the Rito Seco.
Cleanup of the West pit and alluvial aquifer groundwater systems is anticipated to take 7 years.
The DMG currently holds a Financial Warranty in the amount of $7,400,000 to Insure
groundwater will be adequately cleaned up and that the site will be reclaimed pursuant to the
approved reclamation plan.
To date, water quality in the West pit has significantly improved since the contaminant problem
was first discovered. Sulfate levels have dropped below "table standards" (250 ntgt]) in most of
the pit aquifer. Manganese and floride levels have dropped, but still remain above standards.
If you have any questions, please give me a call at 303-866-4060 (direct line).
Sincerely,
C~
99 es t
Environmental Protection Specialist
cc: Michael B.
