DIVISION OF MINERALS AND GEOLOGY
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman SI., Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
Phone: (3031 866-3567
FAX: (3031 832-8106
August 10, 1994
Ms. Carolyn Hunter
La Plata County Planning
1060 East Second Avenue
Durango, CO 81301
STATE OF COLORADO
Y®4r ~`J
RE: Request for Agency Comments - DGMC/Bob Hill
Incas Mine, Permit No. M-86-076
Dear Ms. Runter:
of iota .
~~
He /•
• yn.~
~ r846 ~
Roy Romer
Governor
Michael B. Long
Division Director
I have reviewed the information provided by Mr. Hill regarding
DGMC's plans to modify the existing surface and underground mining
operation situated above the town of Mayday in Little Deadwood
Gulch. The primary change to the existing mine plan approved by
our office in 1986 and subsequently amended in 1987 to allow
surface mining involves the installation of a milling facility to
be built on the top of Ohwiler Ridge. Other modifications to the
permit may be involved, however I have not received the amendment
application that was submitted to our Denver office on June 30,
1994. The Permit Application was submitted along with a Transfer
of Permit (Succession of Operator) Application so that DGMC could
obtain the permit from the previous operator, Northern Minerals,
Inc. of Michigan. Mr. Hill has provided adequate financial
warranty ($40,358.00) to allow processing the Transfer of Permit.
The bond amount may change depending on the details of the revised
mine plan.
COMMENTS:
1. Access Road - An ongoing problem exists between the
operator and an adjacent mining claim holder regarding the
condition of the 4WD access road used to access the Incas
claims and other mining claims. The adjacent claim holder is
Myron Cherry, P.O. Box 7, Radium Springs, NM 88054, telephone
no. 505-524-7994. The portion of the road passing through the
Incas claim block has been obliterated by development of the
surface mining pit, and Mr. Cherry wants the road to be
reconstructed to it's original slope gradient so he can get
past the Incas property to his own cliams. The operator
constructed a steep switchback section to bypass the pit area,
however this section is very difficult to negotiate even with
a good 4WD vehicle. The Division is in the process of working
with the operator to improve the condition of this portion of
the road. I believe some type of access permit was obtained
from the U.S.F.S. by the original permittee for portions of
the road situated on Forest Service Land.
1
