XV. Operations Description - Rules 2.05.2, 2.05.3(1), 2.05.3(2) and 4.0]
Information pertaining to the description of the operations plan is presented
in Volume 9, Tab 12.
Strip mining activities were performed utilizing two 5-yard draglines until
1983 when the Nucla Mine temporarily ceased operations following closure of
the Nucla Generating Station for reconstruction. As part of the Permit
Revision No. 1 application, Peabody has changed this mining method from
draglines to scrapers and dozers.
Mining operations to be conducted in years 1986 to 1988 will occur in five
different areas as depicted on Exhibit 12-1 "Operations Plan" and as addressed
below.
1. Mine Area No. 1 is located in the S 1/2 SW 1/4 of Section 25, T47N R16W
and approximately 2,500 feet northwest of the former mine office. Both
the Upper and Lower Dakota coal seams will be mined and maximum
overburden depth will approach 60 feet. Mining in this area is scheduled
to occur periodically from February, 1987 through January of 1988.
2. Mine Area 2 is located in the NE 1/4 of Section 36, T47N R16W in an area
previously mined and reclaimed under the interim permit 75-36. Only the
Lower Dakota coal seam remains to be mined with overburden depths
approaching 20 feet. Mining is scheduled to occur from May through
September, 1987.
3. Mine Area No. 3 is an area previously mined similar to Mine Area 2.
Mining is slated to occur from February through June, 1988.
4. Mine Area 4 is the former shop area located in S 1/2 SE 1/4 of Section
25, T47N R16W adjacent to the Montrose and San Miguel County landfill.
Both coal seams will be removed with overburden depth approaching 40
feet. Excavation in this area began during the latter part of December,
1986.
5. Mine Area No. 5 is located approximately 1,000 feet northeast of the
former shop building in the SE 1/4 SE 1/4 of Section 25, T47N R16W.
Average overburden depth in this area is approximately 19 feet with only
the Lower Dakota coal seam present. Mining operations within Mine Area
No. 5 are scheduled to begin in May of 1988 and continue through December
of that year.
Peabody proposes to mine approximately 27.7 acres in these five mine areas
yielding 238,600 tons of coal and requiring the displacement of about
1,321,800 cubic yards of overburden and parting material. The mined coal will
be hauled by an independent contractor to the Nucla Generating Station.
The operation is in compliance with the requirements of this section.
-26-
