MAR-16-66 14.62 FROM. AGUIR~ENGINEERe INC. ID. • PACE 14
Mrs. Ann Tatum
March 1 e, 1996
Pepe 6
a thin planter coating on the lower 6 feet of the wall. Looking at the concrete, I don't see any
cracks. The sump appears to haw been excavated Into shale hadrock.
Otf from ths.basement there is a utNity tunnel that extends toward the east end of the house.
It Is a smelt tunnel about 2 feat high end 3 feet wide. !went back as far ea t could go, which
wan probably about 2/3 the width of the house. The piping continues in a very minor space
that wan too small to enter. The subaolls into which this tunnel was excavated consist of a
very herd desiccated play. The east portion of the tunnel Is a little daepsr than the west
portion, and the bottom eppaare damp, but Isn't. There are some salt deposits Indicating that
from time to time water does collect end aveporate In that particular location. There are very
minor vertical shrinkage cracks fn the olay, typically hairline to 1/8" spaced perlodicetly. It
would not bs possible to tell If theta was minor Nuctuations in the Around, as these would be
taken up In the natural shrinkage creaks that exist. The foundation itself is visible on the
south aide et aeverel locatlana. Whether we are looking at the top or the bottom of the
foundation, k'a herd to tell. The foundation appears to consist of native stones with a mud
mortar. If there was slight movement, h would be virtually Impossible to observe or detect.
T11s hot water Ilnea haw been Insulated with a material that may be asbestos contalnlnp. We
recommend thst th-e material ba t~atsd, and If h is ACM, h should bs properly abated and
roplaced with accaphbla materiel.
There are ssriaa of cracks, some of which haw been painted over in the south wall of the
ainple story resldanca. Moat of these aro minor ahrinkape cracks. There are cracks off the
comers and tope of almost each of the windows. Many of these appear to be quite old,
There may haw been some minor attempts In the past to hatch over a few of these. The
appearance of the two-story east end of the south wall, is considerably different. Here,
Instead of the narrow shrlnkaaa cracks, the oracka begin to open up, This is consistent with
the observation mods inside that the front wall has moved outward. Also there is possibly
some slight bulging of the south wall. Cracks sxiat under the upper and Tower windows, but
they are wider and more pronounced, upeoielly under the east end of the second story
window. Neer the top of the very east end below the roof scupper, some plaster has fallen
off. There is a was a crack in exceaa of 114' at the wry east end.
The front face of the home la fairly free of cracks, but there are some minor cracks oft almost
each of the window tomato, At the northsaat comer there is a buttress associated with the
Inside chimney. There is a large diagonal crock where the plaster and stucco of the buttress
has sattlad away from the main portion of the house. Thin particular crack approaches 1"
wide at the top. All the way up the bumess there are a series of primarily horizontal cracks.
These ere sapacially nattceabta at the north aide. There is a chicken wire construction and
stucco.
Along tfia north well at the conneodon between the one end two-story parts, there is e
substantial crack In the upper half of the well. Thla would be on the outside of the Joint
rnpopemteore~teote.mrm ,_
