Attachment No. 2
1983 Shrub Density Monitoring Data
The following shrub density/establishment monitoring transects
were permanently established during the summer of 1983. Initial density
of shrubs was estimated on each permanent 50 X lm' transect. General
observations of established shrubs, regeneration, and overall vegetation
establishment in the transect area was noted. These transects will
be monitored annually to establish developmental patterns and trends
within the shrub communities.
Transect No. 1: Located on a west facing slope. No shrubs occurred
in the transect, but mountain big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata
vaseyana) is establishing in the areas around the transect. Silvery
lupine (LUpinus argenteus) and American vetch (Vicia americana) are
reestablishing well. Good grass/alfalfa (Medicago sa tiva) cover and
regeneration.
Transect No. 2: Located on a gentle southwest slope near a small
depression. No shrubs occured in transect. Good topsoil materials,
but overall stand is rather poor. Native farb regeneration is good.
Fairly recent reclamation.
Transect No. 3: Located on a northwest facing slope. 3 mountain
big sagebrush in transect (246 stems/acre). Good sagebrush and native
farb regeneration. Good vegetative cover.
Transect No. 4: Located on a north facing slope. Eleven mountain
big sagebrush, 2 mountain snowberry (Symphoricarpos oreophilus) in
transect (1,065 stems/acre). Good grass cover with good stand of
established sagebrush.
Transect No. 5: Located on southwest facing slope. Six mountain
big sagebrush, 1 chokecherry IPrunus virginiana) in transect (574
stems/acre). Areas adjacent to transect have good sagebrush and snowberry
regeneration.
Transect No. 6: Located on west facing slope. Five mountain big
sagebrush and 3 mountain snowberry in transect (656 stems/acre).
Very good cover with good American vetch reestablishment.
Transect No. 7: Located on gently sloping northwest slope. One mountain
big sagebrush, 6 mountain snowberry, 1 chokecherry, 1 gambel oak (Quercus
gambelii) in transect (738 stems/acre). Very good shrub and native
forb regeneration in areas adjacent to the transect.
Transect No. 8: Located on a southwest facing slope. Thirty-four
mountain big sagebrush, 2 mountain snowberry in transect (2,950 stems/acre).
Excellent regeneration in surrounding area.
