This INTRODUCTION co to s two illustrative sketches, a longitudinal
cross-section of Sm ggler mountain and a detail of the accessible
portions of the Smuggler mine shown longitudinally and in a plan
view. Additionally, it contains two charts and an illustrative
map. One chart depicts the Geologic Time Scale and the other is a
Generalized Stratigraphic Section of the area with attention to the
Smuggler mine. The map depicts the Major Geologic Features of the
State of Colorado including the Sawatch Uplift in the west central
portion of the State.
Of particular interest in this examination was the surface
expression of the mineralized rock and its comparison with "waste"
rock removed from underground in the course of mining and disposed
of on the surface, specifically on real property now owned by the
Smuggler-Durant Mining Corporation (SONG). Most of the surface
operations of the Smuggler mine were (and are) within the confines
of SDMC real property boundaries and identified by the
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as part of "Operable Unit 2"
