1950 BUREAU OF MINES REPORT
related to a series of northwest-southeast faultsZS that
displace the Leadville-Weber (Belden] contact by up to 20
ft. The low-grade orebodies in the Weber [Belden) were
found to be related to bedding faults, but more so to the
cross faults, and decreased in size away from the latter.
The breccia ores [at the Leadville-Belden contact] are a
little higher in silver and lower in lead than the hanging-
wa11 ores [within the lower Belden], and much more oxidized.
Principal primary minerals are argentiferous galena,
sphalerite, and pyrite in a carbonate gangue. Cadmium is
associated with zinc in small amounts. Wurtzite, an
uncommon zinc sulfide, is present in places.
Historv and production, pp. 3-4; see also previous
references. The authors state that the best properties were
consolidated into the Smuggler-Durant Mining Corp. and the
Della S. Consolidated Mines Co., both operated by Smuggler
Leasing Co. for "many years." However, a dispute developed
between Smuggler Leasing and the owners of the Della S.
which resulted in the cessation of mining in 1918.Zb Small,
intermittent shipments were made by lessees from the
Smuggler tunnels thereafter. During World war II and until
1947 the Herron brothers operated a small gravity
Concentration mill with ores from the Smuggler and Mollie
Gibson dumps and did some exploration in the Smuggler No. 2
tunnel. As of March 1949 the Aspen Mining Co." was doing
exploratory work in the Smuggler as well elsewhere in the
district.
Property and ownership, p. 4. The Smuggler property
consists of six patented lode claims: Silver Brick, Emma,
Glendale, Smuggler, Accident, and Trueworthy.xa
'S The Della-Smuggler fault system.
There is no mention of this in the HYHAN
65. According to Hyman 92-93, the decision wa;
reached its deepest practical level, as the s
followed for a number of years was very short
there was "no substantial prospect of ever r
bodies." Therefore, the pumps were pulled and
flood.
York.
MEHOIRS, Part IV, post p.
made that the mine had
ire shoot that had been
on the 18th level, and
iscovering any new ore
the mine was allowed to
" A subsidiary of Anaconda Copper Mining Company, New York, New
ze The ownership actually consists of parts of the following lode
claims, all in the Roaring Fork Mining District, Colorado: Silver Brick
USMS No. 3952, Emma USMS No. 2120, Glendale USMS No. 6859, Smuggler USMS
No. 1656, Accident USMS 5135 AM, and Trueworthy USMS No. 3740, plus parts
of the Arkansaw USMS 6399, General Jackson USMS 3991, J.
