1950 BUREAU OF MINES REPORT
M. E. VOLIN ~ J. H. GILD, INVESTIGATION OF SMUGGLER LEAD-ZINC MINE, ASPEN,
p ITRIN COURTY, COLORADO, [J.S. BUREAU OF MINES REPORT OF INVESTIGATIONS
4696 [195D] (hereinafter "195D BUREAU OF MINES REPORT"~.
Prior to the STEGEN REPORT this report was the most recent
public detailed examination of the Smuggler mine. It
includes results from both hand and drilled samples.'= The
study was part of post-world War II analyses of potential
sites for strategic mineral extraction.
Introduction and summary, pp. 1-2: The Smuggler mine was
first examined by the U.S. Bureau of Mines [USBM] in 1943 by
C. R. Wilfley, accompanied by lessees R. D. Rohlfing and J.
W. Vanderwilt.27 The purpose of that study was to sample an
apparently-continuous breccia zone along the contact between
the Leadville and Weber [Belden] formations. The samples
indicated that the target zone contained low but significant
lead and zinc, and that the minerals were partially oxidized
and thus difficult to concentrate.` The property was
revisited in 1946 by Vo1in, accompanied by William Herron,
lessee, and the recommendation was made that further
evaluation by USBM was warranted. Sampling and drilling by
USBM was performed from October 1946 to February 1947 and
from August 1947 to April 1948. At the time of the
investigation, only the Midnight mine, four miles south of
Aspen, was operating.
The 1943 USBM examination of the Smuggler Nos. 1 and 2
tunnels noted a mineralized breccia zone at the Leadville-
Weber [Belden] contact that appeared to be continuous.
Sampling showed low but significant lead, zinc and silver,
with very small amounts of cadmium. The minerals at these
levels were partially oxidized. The possibility of large
tonnages, encouraged by exploratory work in the base of the
Weber [Belden] by the Herron brothers led to the 1946-48
USBM sampling and drilling work.
The breccia ores were found not to be continuous but instead
" See also the 1953 AEC REPORT, post p. 23.
Formerly of the U.S. Geological Survey; see generally VANDERWILT
REPORT, described above in Part II.
" Utilizing 1995-1950 technology.
Bruce A.
