iii iiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
999
• EDNA MINE--1992 EROSION INVENTORY REPORT
OVERVIEW
Section 4.3 of Permit No. C-80-001 requires an annual erosion inventory of Edna
Mine's permanently reclaimed lands that remain under bond. The permit
requires that an inventory report be submitted to the Mined Land Reclamation
Division on or before April 30th of each year. With the MLRD's approval this
report is submitted prior to May 30th. This extension has been granted since this
is the first year that this inventory has been required and approval of the permit
revision was finalized after snow cover conditions at the mine precluded inventory
activities during the fall and winter.
Areas permanently reclaimed that are required to be inventoried under the plan
include the east end of the Moffat Area and a small strip of land which remains
under bond in the South-of--Shop Area. Although some areas on West Ridge are
permanently reclaimed, they are temporarily exempted from inventory require-
ments pending the construction of runoff control structures required by the West
Ridge Hydrologic Reconstruction Plan. Nonetheless, a voluntary survey of
selected subareas within the West Ridge Area was undertaken during the spring
of 1992. The subarea results are included in this report and are intended to
provide historic information that will aid in the future evaluation of the effective-
ness of the structures constructed under the West Ridge Hydrologic Reconstruc-
• lion Plan. Results of the inventory are described by mining area below. The areas
inventoried for 1992 are depicted on Exhibit 1.
INVENTORY METHODS
Pedestrian and vehicular surveys of permanently reclaimed areas were conduct-
ed to inventory erosion features. Individual features and entire sites were
evaluated as outlined in Section 4.3. The existing condition of the single concen-
trated flow feature inventoried was documented using method (1) ("Cross-Section
Survey") outlined in Permit No. C-80-001 on page 4.3-19. The method chosen for
this structure is designed to determine the rate of degradation or agradation
within a given reach using static reference points over time.
To evaluate the overall erosion condition of various reclaimed areas, the Bureau of
Land Management's Erosion Condition Classification System described in
Technical Note No. 346 was utilized. This method considers both sheet, and rill
and gully erosion, and documents the overall erosion condition of a given site.
This method is described in detail in Permit No. C-80-001, Appendix 4.3-B.
MONITORING INFORMATION
The Moffat, South-of--Shop and West Ridge Areas were inventoried in 1992. As
previously stated, an inventory of West Ridge is not required by the permit until
hydrologic structures specified under the West Ridge Hydrologic Reconstruction
WRE May 28, 1992
