VII. Alluvial Valley Floors - Rules 2.06.8 and 4.24
In the original Findings Document, the Division determined that the Oak Creek
Valley north of the permit area was an alluvial valley floor. The findings
made in regard to Oak Creek Valley remain valid. It was determined that the
other two drainages in the permit area (South Oak Creek and Lewis Gulch) were
not alluvial valley floors. There are no changes to this section.
The application is in compliance with the requirements of this section.
VIII. Probable Hydrologic Consequences of Mining and Cumulative Hydrologic
m~-~-~~°xs---irr~ s-rcz-x7 rr~ ~mrxrrn,.
The original Findings Document includes extensive information regarding the
geology and hydrology of the general area of the Twin Pines No. 2 Mine. This
information remains valid for the proposed operation during the permit renewal
term.
In addition to the Twin Pines No. 2 Mine, current active coal mining in the
Cumulative Hydrologic Impact study area is limited to the Southfield Mine
(previously named the Dorchester No. 1 Mine), located approximately 5 miles
southeast of the Twin Pines operation. The Newlin Creek Mine, located
adjacent to Southfield, was reclaimed during 1989. The G.E.C. Strip Mine in
the same area is inactive, with its permit revoked and bond forfeited.
Reclamation of the G.E.C. property is scheduled to begin soon under Division
supervision.
Probable Hydrologic Consequences of Mining at the Twin Pines No. 2 Mine
The operator has provided information on the Probable Hydrologic Consequences
of the mine on pages 94 and 95 of the permit application. Several potential
impacts were anticipated by the original Probable Hydrologic Consequences
document for the Twin Pines No. 2 operation; however, none were considered to
be serious enough to damage the hydrologic balance of the area. Additional
potential impacts, however, are introduced by pumping of mine water to the
surface, which began during the previous permit term.
-8-
