~•!'~
Richartl 0. Lamm
Governor
999
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
David H. Getches, Executive Director
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
DAVID C. SH ELTO N, Director _
P c.
MEMORANDUM =' v
~12 Dec tuber 1986
T0: Tom Schreiner - ~.~~ "
FROM: Jim Pendleton
RE: Orchard Valley.-West rtals - "Geotechnical Concerns" & "Rock Buttress"
(Permit No: C-83-038)
I have reveiwed the two separate letters referenced above, submitted by
Colorado Westmoreland, Inc. on December 10, 1986. I had previously discussed
both of these items with Mr. Sakurada, engineer for CWI, on Friday, December
5th. I requested that Mat follow up our conversation with a written submittal
to document the operator's requests.
The first letter ("Geotechnical Concerns") addresses a common earthern
construction problem. Oversize boulders are excavated and require special
handling when placed in the embankment. Golder Associates' recommendations
are acceptable. They recommend placement of rock in the central zone of the
embankment, in a small butress at the front of the first terrace and as riprap
along the groin of the embankment and the natural slope. All of these
suggestions are acceptable.
The second letter ("Rock Buttress") addresses the construction of a small rock
buttress to retain a landslide above the culvert inlet facility. The slide
had been mapped in pre-construction analyses of the site. The operator, based
upon Golder Associates' design recommendations, proposes to construct a rock
buttress adjacent to the toe of the landslide. The plan, as depicted in the
accompanying plan map and cross-sectional sketch is acceptable.
attachments:
cc: Bob Liddle
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel.
