Date .2004
Landowner /address
Dear
The Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology has conducted a preliminary study of known
fires occurring at abandoned coal mines in Colorado. Our investigation indicates that the
abandoned Black Diamond coal mine is burning. The surface expression of the fire is located at
or near NI/2 SI/2 Sec. IS TIN R94W. Rio Blanco County. County records indicate that you may
own this property.
Because the wildfire hazard in Colorado may be very high this summer, we are making an effort
to inform affected landowners of the locations of fires that occur in some abandoned coal mines.
As a land owner you may wish to take some steps to minimize the potential of a wildfire
occurring as a result of the subsurface tire. Brush and dried grass removal from the vicinity of
hot vents, or the construction of a fire line around the perimeter of the surface expression of the
subsurface fire are two measures that you may consider undertaking. You may also wish to
contact your local fire protection provider for additional suggestions, and to inform them of the
subsurface fire. Because work around subsurface fires involves exposure to hot vents and
potentially unstable ground, extreme caution should be exercised by anyone, including yourself,
who may visit or work at the site.
[ am enclosing a description of the surface expression of the fire for your reference. This
information is from avet-to-be-released report that details the status of all known~res at
abandoned coal mines in Colorado. We will send you a copy afthe complete report under
separate cover /SANDY- the Bear Fire is not in the report, because we don not consider it to
be burnine in an inactive /abandoned mine. These last 2 sentences are not really applicable to
ou . We are also forwarding the tre iz~ormation to the County Commissioners and the County
Sheriflso that they can be prepared for an emergencies that may arise. SANDY- Ron sent
letters to the county sheriffand county commissioners in affected counties. I have not seen
these. so I do not have a copy to provide you. Maybe try Lorena for these.
Please contact me if you have questions or comments
Sincerely
