U.S. DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR <br />OFFICE OF SURFACE MINING <br />RECLAMATION AND ENFORCEMENT <br />NOTICE OF A DECISION AND AVAILABILITY <br />OF BOTH A TECHNICAL ANALYSIS AND AN <br />ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT FOR <br />WEST ELK COAL COMPANY <br />PERMANENT PROGRAM PERMIT REVISION AND <br />MINING PLAN MODIPICATION <br />MT. GUNNISON NUMBER 1'MZNE <br />GUNNISON COUNTY, COLORADO <br />The United States Department of the Interior, in accordance with Section 523 <br />of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977, has approved a <br />mining plan modification for West Elk Coal Company to mine coal at its Mt. <br />Gunnison No. 1 mine. The documentation for the decision was prepared by the <br />Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM). <br />The Mt. Gunnison No. 1 underground coal mine is located in Gunnison County, <br />Colorado, 1 mile east of Somerset, Colorado. The proposed modification will <br />_ cover approximately 320 acres all of which are underlain by Federal coal. - - <br />Maximum mine production will be at a rate of 2.8 million tons of coal per year <br />over 40 years. <br />Pursuant to 40 CFR Sections 1501.4(e) and 1506.6, notice is hereby given that <br />_~ OSM has found that no significant environmental impacts would result from such <br />approval based on an environmental assessment prepared by OSM and the Colorado <br />Mined Land Reclamation Division's findings document. OSM's recommendation to <br />__ _ _ _ approve__ West_ Elk _Coal Company's mining plan modification is-in accordance-with ----- - <br />30 CFR Part 746.
