Loggerhead shrike (Lanius ludovicianus),'Federal category 2 species;
use has not been recorded on the review area. Potential breeding and
nesting habitat is present. Loggerhead shrikes are dependant upon the
sagebrush and gambel oak shrub communities for breeding and nesting
habitat in this region, during spring and summer. Their presence in
this region during winter is uncommon.
River otters (Lutra canadensis), State Endangered species; are not
known to be present on the review area, however, the Notch Fork of the
Gunnison River is considered suitable habitat, A population exists in
the Gunnison Gorge 24 miles southwest of the proposed lease tract.
Lynz (Felis lvnx), State Endangered species; it is possible for their
use to occur in the region, although they are not known to be present
on the review area. The zange of lynx in Colorado is believed to be
confined to coniferous forests above 9,000 feet.
Grand Hesa penstemon (Penstemon mensarum), Federal category 2 species;
until recently was known to occur in this area only on the north side
of the North Fork of the Gunnison River in the Havksnesc drainage.
During July, 1944, it's presence was documented aC eight locations on
the review area b^r Dr. Robert Dorn, of Mountain West Environmental
Services. From his report co the Forest Service he wrote, "Above 7800
feet it was so abundant chat it was difficult to find a relatively
flat site 125 feet by 125 feet that did not have the plant. The
plants were abundant along most of the roads and trails as well as in
natural openings of the oak-serviceberry-chokecherry habitat which
covers thousands of acres in the vicinity, most of which has difficult
access. Past exploratory drilling has actually helped the plants by
providing openings for them co colonize."
The following list of listed, proposed, or candidate species have the
potential to occur in the region, and on the review area, but have not been
found on the review area:
Black-Footed Ferree
Ferruginous Hawk
Long-Billed Curlew
Northern Goshawk
Southwest Wi11ov Flycatcher
White-Faced Ibis
Whooping Crane
Adobe Desert Parsley
Boreal toad
Clay-Loving Buckwheat
Columbian Sharptailed Grouse
Roundtail chub
Flannelmouth sucker
(Mustela nigripes)
(Buteo regalis)
(Numenius americanus)
(Accipiter ¢entilis)
(Epidomax trailii extimus)
(Plegadis chihi)
(Crus Americana)
(Lomatium concinnum}
(Bufo boreas)
(Eriogonwn pelinophilum)
(TVmoanuchus ohasianellus)
(Gila robusta)
(Catostomus Latipinnis)
Endangered
Category-2
Category-2
Category-2
Category-1
Category-2
Endangered
Category-2
Category-2
Endangered
Category-2
Category-2
Category-2
Category 1 and 2 species are candidates for listing as threatened of
endangered under the Endangered Species Acc; information is currently not
sufficient to support listing.
~'•

!5
