-15-
Salt Creek Mining Company has supplied data indicating characteristics of
water quantity and quality for East Salt Creek in the vicinity of Munger
Canyon and for the drainage in Munger Canyon. Total dissolved solids in East
Salt Creek have been noted over a range of 600 mg/1 to 10,000 mg/l. The
accepted standard for irrigation water is 1500 mg/1 and for livestock is 5000
mg/l. Water is typically a sodium sulfate type.
In Munger Creek, like most semi-arid ephemeral drainages, dissolved
constituents in surface water often reach high levels during storm runoff.
Dissolved solids measured in Munger Canyon ranged from 92 mg/1 in December to
956 mg/1 in April.
Subsequent to issuance of the initial permanent regulatory program permit,
Salt Creek Mining company implemented a plan for the collection, recording and
reporting of surface water quality and quantity data. The program consists of
surface water monitoring above and below the disturbance in the Munger Canyon
tributary, along Munger Canyon before the confluence with East Salt Creek and
along East Salt Creek upstream and downstream of the confluence with Munger
Canyon. The monitoring plan also includes a new monitoring site (SW-8) which
is located along East Salt Creek between Munger and McClave Canyon. This
monitoring plan will be sufficient to identify any effects of the operation on
the surface water hydrology.
Salt Creek Mining company has committed to the following monitoring program:
Surface Water Monitoring:
A) Flow measurements will be taken at surface water monitoring site SW-3
and water samples will be taken from sites SW-3, SW-6 and SW-7 on
Munger Canyon twice a year (at different times of the year) as follows:
a) once during spring snowmelt
b) once during a storm event (spring or summer)
B) Flow measurements will be taken quarterly from site SW-1 and water
samples will be taken quarterly from sites SW-1, SW-4, and SW-8.
C) The water samples will be chemically analyzed for the parameters
specified below:
pH
Specific Conductance
Temperature (field)
Total Suspended Solids
Total Dissolved Solids
Total Combustible Solids
Total Hardness
Sodium Absorption
Ratio
Bicarbonate (HC03)
Magnesium (Mg+2)
Sodium (Na+)
Sulfate (SO )
Aluminum (A4)
Arsenic (As)
Boron (B)
Cadmium (Cd)
Copper (Cu)
Iron (Fe)
Lead (Pb)
Manganese (Mn)
Mercury (Hg)
Molybdenum (Mo)
Selenium (Se)
