(WALSH) is pleased to present this letter
report summarizing the disposal activities for four 55-gallon drums containing PCB-contaminated
oil at the above-referenced property. The details of the work performed by WALSH are
presented below.
Background
W ALSH was retained by the Colorado Division of Mineral and Geology (CDMG) to characterize
and dispose of four 55-gallon drums containing waste oil located at the Hawk's Nest Mine site
4 miles east of Somerset, Colorado. The waste was generated during past mine maintenance
activities at the site. The project included the chazacterization, removal, transportation, and
disposal of the four drums of oil in accordance with State and Federal laws.
/nitid Sampling
On September 18, 1995, WALSH collected samples from the four drums of oil and one shallow
soil sample from beneath the drum storage area. The four drums were labelled with a unique
WALSH identification tag and entered into a field notebook. The conditions of the drums were
also noted and recorded. It was determined during the inspection that one of the four drums
would require an overpack drum for proper shipment to a disposal facility.
The results from the initial sampling event indicated that oil in all four drums contained PCBs
in concentrations that would require disposal at a TSCA-approved facility. Results from the
shallow soil sample collected from below the drum storage area indicated that the soil was not
significantly impacted by the drums. Copies of laboratory data and chain-of-custody forms aze
attached to this letter and summarized in Table 1.
Western Slope Division:
145 Grand Avenue . Suite E . P.O. Box 1942 .
