Lieutenant Pike was responsible for much publicity about the
Colorado :iprings region. He wrote of the "Grand Peak", later named Pikes Peak, that he
encountered when he arrived in the region. In 1869, General William Jackson Palmer was
traveling by stagecoach and was amazed by the attraction of the Colorado Springs region,
and he knew the azea would attract his wealthy European and East Coast friends. The City
of Colorado Springs was first established in 1871 and thrived as the economy focused on
tourism. Visitors came to experience the azea's beauty and many were inspired to stay by
the mild climate and the region's growing resort accommodations.
Hydrosphere Resource Consultants, 1002 Walnut Street Suite 200.
