Pikeview Quarry Environmental Assessment Page 39
grasslands and foothills and prefers partly wooded, brushy, rocky areas. Hog-nosed skunk
was recently found in the San Isabel National Forest, in habitat that is similaz to the
' proposed project site, indicating the possibility that this species could be present in the
National Forest System land west of the Pikeview Quarry.
' 3.4 Human Environment
' 3.4.1 Cultural Resources
A cultural resources inventory of the National Forest System land at the site was
conducted in July 2000, incompliance with the USDA Forest Service requirements
' regazding Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. No records indicating sites
or other cultural resources were found for this site and no previous surveys have been
' conducted in the project azea.
A field survey of the site was conducted on July 2000 and confirmed the absence of
both historic and prehistoric resources. In August 2000 the Heritage Resources Program for
t the Pike and San Isabel National Forests, Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands
issued a Cultural Resources cleazance letter for the proposed project azea (Appendix B.2).
No "cultural properties listed on, recommended eligible to, or potentially eligible to the
' National Register of Historic Places" were found in the project azea.
' 3.4.2 Recreation
Recreational opportunities in the azea neaz the proposed project include the
experiences available on open National Forest System lands. However, the access to this
azea is restricted due to its proximity to private lands, to the steep slopes, and by its distance
from existing trails and forest access roads.
' Occasionally, the azea is used by hunters and day hikers. The closest National Forest
System trails are located approximately 2 to 3 miles north of the azea to be affected, and run
' East-West (Stanley Canyon Trail and West Monument Trail). Therefore, it is not likely that
the proposed project will significantly impact existing recreational activities on National
Forest lands.

3.4.3 Socioeconomic
' El Paso County (County) is located in east central Colorado and encompasses more
than 2,158 square miles. The western portion of the County is very mountainous while the
eastern portion is mainly prairie land. Interstate Highway 25 connects EI Paso County to
' other urban areas along the Colorado Front Range. To the south of the county is the
Arkansas River Valley with agricultural lands and the town of Pueblo and to the north is the
Douglas County and the Denver Metropolitan area. Elevations in El Paso County ranges
' from 5,095 feet at the southern border to 14,110 feet at the summit of Pikes Peak neaz the
western boundazy.
Hydrosphcre Resource Consultants, 1002 Walnut Svcet Suite 200, Boulder, CO 80302
