Pikeview Quarry Environmental Assessment Page 23
Control of small infestations will be done at the time of discovery. If chemical
controls aze required for that species then this control will be done at the first
biologically appropriate time. If physical removal is feasible for an encountered
weed species, then it will be immediately removed upon discovery.
Large infestations will be controlled using a concerted control program
appropriate for that species. In cases where physical control can be done and
the infestation is not too large, volunteers can be recruited to "weed" the area.
' Where chemical controls are necessary the best approach will be used, but very
toxic herbicides will be avoided unless there are no other options available to
control that weed.
x) No fertilizer will be applied on National Forest System lands without prior written
approval from the Forest Service with exception of fertilizer tablets used in tree and
' shrub plantings.
xi) The permit holder will take all reasonable precautions to prevent and suppress forest
' fires. Open fires are prohibited except with written permit from the authorized
officer or the authorized officer's agent.
C -Performance Guidelines for Private Lands
i) Large donations of soils will first be examined to determine its suitability. Small
donations of different soil characteristics will be separated as much as possible, but
complete elimination of any blending of different soil types will not be done as that
is probably not necessary and ofren not even desirable.
ii) Soil will not be defined to include exclusively organic matter (garden waste, tree
trimmings or tree removal, and compost). Organic matter mixed into a mineral soil
' component where the mineral soil comprises the majority of the material will be
defined as soil.
iii) For donated materials, organic matter will be stored sepazate from soil, but will be
blended with soil, especially where the soil to be spread contains mostly mineral
components and little or no organic matter (e.g., subsoils).
iv) Donated topsoil would be stored neaz the plant area and in other locations within the
currently permit area. Soil would be hauled to sloped benches ready to receive
topsoil. The stockpile(s) will be located in area(s) of minimal runoff and disturbance
' from the gravel mining operations.
v) Weed control will be employed if invasion of a weed species seriously threatens the
' continued development of desired vegetation in the reclaimed area or adjacent areas.
Weed control will be accomplished using the following approaches:

Hydrosphere Resourcc Consul[anls, 1002 Walnut Sirect suite 200, Boulder, CO 80302
