'
Pikeview Quarry Environmental Assessment Page 7

County, Colorado, supported the proposed reclamation plan through a resolution dated
Februazy 7, 2000.
Several comments were received in response to the public notification, some
supporting the application and some objecting for various reasons. A review of the letters
received and press articles showed that the concerns could generally be grouped into one of
' four categories; traffic and transportation, visual impacts, dust, and noise caused by
additional blasting. Although traffic, noise, and dust impacts will occur at the same level as
they occur currently, those impacts will be felt for an extended period of time. The
' following paragraphs identify specific concerns received.
' 1.6.1 Traffic and Transportation
Concerns raised regazding traffic and transportation included traffic safety, reduced
visibility, dust, and blowing material during high winds, vehicle ingress and egress onto the
Allegheny Road, and the safety hazards and road damage caused by extended truck traffic
on Allegheny Road and neighboring roads.

1.6.2 Visuallmpacts
' Visually, the site will change from its present appeazance. Currently, the area has
steep, raw banks comprised of decomposed granite and limestone. At the top of the banks
are mature stands of Ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, and Rocky Mountain juniper. This will
' change as the layback operation commences, with the removal of the trees so the underlying
material can be removed. During the removal of materials, it will look like a mining
operation, with lazge machinery moving lazge amounts of material down towazds the base of
the slope. Then, the hill will be graded to a slope of approximately two (horizontal) to one
(vertical) and reclaimed with grasses, shrubs and trees planted as seedlings. To obtain the
required slopes, it will be necessazy to mine past the existing cut onto National Forest
System land which will enlazge the size of the existing raw cut slopes. However, the
horizon will not be altered as there are higher ridges that will not be affected by the
proposed project.
1.6.3 Noise
' Noise caused by additional blasting during the layback operation was a concern for
the adjacent residential communities.
4 Ai
Q
lit
1
6
r
.
.
ua
y
Air quality (primarily dust) was also mentioned as a concern for adjacent residential
communities.

' Hydrosphere Resource Consultanu, 1002 Walnut Sweet Suire 200, Boulder, CO 80302
1
