Pikeview Quarry Environmental Assessment Page 4
d
ld
f
i ,
orest lan
wou
be located
n a Management Prescription azea SB (USDA Forest Service,
1991). Areas designated SB emphasize the management of forage and cover on big game
winter ranges. ,
Applicable management activities may include: Visual Resource Management,
Managemt^nt of Developed Recreation Sites, Dispersed Recreation Management, Wildlife '
and Fish Resource Management, Wildlife Habitat Improvement and Maintenance, Rangr~
Resource lvlanagement, Silvicultural Prescriptions, Special Use Management (non-
recreation), Rights-of--Way and Land Adjustments, Transportation System Management, t
and Fuel Treatment. The guidelines for each of these management activities are described
below.

Visual Resources management activities are designed and implemented to blend v~ith
natural landscape, according to Visual Quality Objective (VQO) of modification.
Under these VQOs, management activities may visually dominate the original ,
chazacteristic landscape. However, activities of vegetative and land form alteration
must borrow from naturally established form, line, color, or texture so completely and
at such scale that its visual characteristics are those of natural occurrences within the '
surrounding area or character type. Reduction in line, form, color, and texture
contrasts should be accomplished within one year.
'
Management of Developed Recreation Sites goals are to close all developed sites
during the winter management seasons. Design, construction and operation of
developed recreation sites occur only to the extent that summer season management '
objectives need to be met.
Dispersed Recreation Management is to manage summer use-season for appropriate '
Recreation Opportunity Spectrum (ROS) opportunities, including: (1) "provide
roaded natural recreation opportunities within 1 /2 mile of Forest arterial, collector,
and local roads with better than primitive surfaces which are open to public motorized ,
travel; (2) provide semi-primitive motorized recreation opportunities with a low to
moderate incidence of contact with other groups and individuals within 1/2 mile of
designated local roads with primitive surfaces and trails open to motorized recreation ,
use; (3) where local roads aze closed to public motorized recreation travel, provide for
dispersed non-motorized recreation opportunities. Manage recreation use to provide
for the incidence of contact with other groups and individuals appropriate for the
established ROS classification; and (4) provide semi-primitive non-motorized
recreation opportunities in all areas more than 112 mile away from roads and trails
open to motorized recreation use." In addition, winter use is managed for very low '
densities. Areas are closed to human use to the degree necessary in winter to prevent
disturbance of wildlife.
Wildlife and Fish Resource Management goals are to maintain habitat capability for ,
management indicator species. According to National Forest Service standazds and
guidelines for this management activity, habitat capability should be maintained at a '
level at least 80 percent of potential capability.
1
Hydrosphere Resource Consullan[s, 1002 Walnut Sveet Suite 200, Boulder, CO 80302
