f
S
2
it is unlikely that another mine will be established in the area in the foreseeable future. Future
leasing would create additional and possibly more extensive surface disturbance. Due to Mine
Safety and Health Administration regulations, future development would most likely be
through new portal sites, resulting in coal lost in barriers around the current portal sites. The
entire LMU reserves can be produced from the McClave Canyon Mine or a combination of
McCLute and Munger. Other nearby potential portal sites are located in steep, narrow canyons
and show evidence of extensive bum at the outcrop or landslides, or would not provide access
to faulted portions of the reserves.
In order to ensure Mardmum Economic Recovery, and in the interest of conservation of
the leased mineral resource and other natural rrsourrxs on and adjacent to the LMU, the
requested suspension of operations and production is hereby granted for a period of five
years, effective June 30, 1997, c~!tgert to annum n,fiFiratinn as required by Stipulation
3 of this decision.
The following LMU/lease terms and conditions are suspended during the effective term of the
suspension:
1.
