We
discussed several items, but of primary interest was the size of permanent
reference sites. As I indicated to you, we intend to construct three, one acre
reference sites for each major vegetation type. It is my understanding from our
phone conversation that based on Lnformation provided you, you felt the above
structures would be sufficient.
I am providing some additional information on the areas selected as perman-
ent reference sites. As stated in our phone conversation, we will be sampling
two main vegetative types, mountain shrub and big sagebrush-grass communities.
Permanent reference sites have been chosen such that three different aspects are
represented - north, west, and east slopes. No south slopes of any extent exist
within the area to be disturbed, All areas will be Fenced [o preclude livestock
use until sampled, After sampling is complete, major portions of [he fencing
will be removed to allow livestock use. Please recall that we intend to estab-
lish a relationship between permanent reference sites and pre-mine reference
sites via a regression equation. This concept has been discussed before with
many of you a[ the Division as well as the OSM so I will refrain from going into
detail.
Carol, if you have any further comments on [his issue or if I have misin-
terpreted our phone conversation, please feel free to call.
Best regards,
H.
