As
discussed earlier with the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), the Highway
fill is being constructed with crushed rock that has been processed for metals recovery
and well rinsed (referred to as Pad No. 2 material). The Construction Manager for this
construction project, Ford, Bacon & Davis (FB&D), requested that Golder Associates
Inc. (Golder) evaluate the potential use of a mixture of Cazltoa Tailings material and Pad
No. 2 material as Structural Fill for the Highway 67 Realignment Fill.
The volume of the Highway fill is estimated at approximately 750,000 cubic yazds. By
being able to introduce a fraction of the approximately 1,000,000 cubic yards of tailings
that needs to be relocated from the Pbase II Heap Leach Pad azea with the Pad No. 2
material as part of the Highway Fill, less tailings material would have to be placed in
Upper Arequa Gulch, which has a finite storage capability.
Representative samples of Cazlioa Tailings material and Pad No. 2 material were
collected to obtain the consolidation characteristics fora 20 percent Carlton Tailings / 80
per cent Pad No. 2 mixture.
Consolidation of a soil material generally occurs due to the following:
Deformation of the soil grains;
2. Compression of the air and pore water fluid in the voids; and
3. Squeezing out of the air aad pore water fluid from the voids.
OFFICES INAUSRLV.V1. CANALI4, GERMANY, HUNGARY.ITAIY.
