Irri ation -This option provides the best chance for successful revegetation, and
involves pumping water from the pond to seeded areas during the growing season. If
this option is pursued, contact the local NRCS office for advice on design and
installation of an irrigation system. In addition, you must coordinate with FWS
regarding pumping water from the pond to ensure that T&E fish would not be affected.
Pocking and seeding - If irrigation is not a viable option, the preferred method for
seedbed preparation involves "pocking" the surface prior to seeding. This involves
using an excavator to dig bucket-size closely-spaced depressions for the purpose of
creating amicro-environment for moisture retention and plant growth.
Ripping and seeding - If the pocking option is not used, the surface should be deeply
ripped along the contour prior to seeding. This option has a lower probability for
success than the pocking method.
If the site is pocked or ripped, please contact this office for more detailed procedures
using these methods.
The following reclamation procedure should be followed:
All disturbed areas should be seeded with the following mixture. Application rates are
for pure, live seed (PLS).
Species
Crested Wheatgrass -Ephraim
Streambank wheatgrass - Sodar
Indian ricegrass - Paloma
Blue grama -Covington
Sand dropseed
Galleta -Viva
Fourwing Saltbush - Rincon or Native
Application Rate
lbs./Acre PLS
1.5
1.6
2.0
0.3
0.1
0.2
3.0
8.71bs. PLS/acre
For surfaces to be irrigated, prepare seedbed by contour cultivating four to six inches
deep. Drill seed I to 2 inches deep following the contour. In areas that cannot be
drilled (pocked and ripped surfaces), broadcast seed at 1.5 times the above application
rate.
Seeding should be completed after September 1 and prior to October 1 of 2004.
If seeding is done after October 1, the success rate goes down.
