Beneath
the valley fill material lies bedrock of Pierre Shale.
Niwot soils are not classified as prime farmland by the Soil
Conservation Service. The other soil type, Loveland, occupies
• 18 acres on site and can be classified as prime farmland
if the land is irrigated with an adequate water supply.
Vegetation
Man's activities along South Boulder Creek for the last 150
years have substantially changed the original plant
communities . In the lightly grazed pastures , original
vegetation patterns can still be seen. Sedges and tall
grasses constitute the bulk of the plant cover in these
areas. In heavily grazed pastures , native prairie species
have been replaced by European pasture grasses (orchard grass,
timothy and red top) . Numerous weedy species have become
established, comprising a large component of the flora on
the site. Dense sods of Kentucky bluegrass or buffalo
A-
