Truck trip generation
The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of truck traff c from the Castle Rock Quarry
operation on Douglas County roads. The amount of truck traffic generated is directly related to
the volume of sales. In this situation we refer to eleven yeazs of sales records on the Ditmars
' operation from both Centennial Materials and the previous owner.
During this discussion, we will be talking about number of trucks and volume of sales. It is
' important to define a few terms at the beginning. Rhyolite from the Castle Rock Quarry
operation will be sold by the ton. Therefore, ow discussion of sales volume will be in tons.
Trucks are counted in both "loads" and "trips". A load is a loaded truck leaving the site for
delivery to a customer. A trip is any truck leaving or entering the site. Therefore, one load
generates two truck trips. The terms load and trip are both used in this discussion and it is
' important to note which term is being used.
Table 3.H.4(1) is a compilation of eleven yeazs of sales data. This data is based on copies of
' sales tickets for every transaction. The sales ticket indicates the date of the sale and the tons of
material pwchased. The Ditmars operation is a year-round operation and ships approximately
245 days per yeaz. The top row indicates eleven years of data from 1984 to 1994. The lefthand
' column is broken down into 12 months a year followed by totals per month in each year. The
highest yeaz of sales was 1985 when 123,265 tons of material were shipped. The lowest year of
sales was 1989 when 39,981 tons of material were shipped.
' The fow bottom rows of the table give specific information about the operation on a per year
' basis. One of the rows indicates the average number of loads leaving the quarry on a daily basis
in that year. The average load was about 12 to 13 tons which is a three axle, ten fire truck.
At the Ditmars operation, a very busy day would be over 40 truck loads sold. The last row in the
table indicates how many days in each of the eleven years this occurred.
' Table 3.H.4(2) is a calculation of the average sales volume based on the eleven years of data.
The Table gives average monthly sales, average loads shipped per month, and average loads
shipped per day. In Table 3.H.4(2), the average annual sales were 75,665 tons, with 24 truck
' loads sold each day.
This data from the Diunazs operation is an accwate representation of what will happen at the
' Castle Rock Quarry operation, Based on this data, we predict that an average sales year for the
Castle Rock Quarry will he 80,000 - 100,000 tons. The maximum sales year will be similaz to
' 1985 and we predict 125,000 tons sold and 34 loads per day.
1

24
'
