' 3.H.4 Transportation
Purpose of the study
In comparison to other quarrying operations, the Castle Rock Quarry will have only a fraction of
the shipment volume. Rhyolite is a specialty rock and is not utilized, by its nature, in the high
volume applications of asphalt and concrete. Also, rhyolite has a more constant sales volume
throughout the yeaz, rather than large peak months.
As mentioned previously, since the Castle Rock Quarry will replace the Ditmazs operation on
' South Lake Gulch Road, the transportation issues for the community will remain unchanged
from the current operation. Rhyolite is mainly transported in tandem-axle trucks by small
landscape contractors and we have accurate trucking data on the Ditmars operation in order to
' ascertain truck trip volume.
This Transportation Study will address the mazket locations for the rock, haul routes, number of
' truck trips generated from the Castle Rock Quarry operation, access point to the site, and an
overall safety plan for truck traffic.
' Context
The Castle Rock Quarry is located in a rural section of Douglas County, southeast of the Town of
' Castle Rock. Ridge Road is on the west side of the permit azea. Ridge Road is a relatively flat,
two lane, all weather gravel road with a speed limit of 35 mph. It nms along the ridge between
' Willow Creek and Sellers Gulch. Generally the aligrunent is straight except for two 90° toms.
South Lake Gulch Road forms part of the southern boundary of the permit azea. This road
connects Castle Rock to State Highway 83 to the southeast. Recently the road was paved from
Quarry Road, which is the entrance to the Ditmazs operation, south, past Ridge Road close to the
intersection of Castlewood Canyon Road. The road passes through hilly terrain and is posted at
25 to 35 mph. The speed limits aze well posted and guazd rails aze installed at needed locations.
Castlewood Canyon Road forms the eastern boundary of the permit azea. It is a narrow, two
lane, all weather gravel road. It travels along the bottom of the bluff along Cherry Creek. There
aze no roads adjoining the permit azea on the north.
' The majority of the land use surrounding the permit azea is grazing. There aze scattered
residences on the north, west, and southwest sides of the permit azea. Land to the south and east
' is undeveloped and owned by the Winkler Cattle Company. Presently, the lazgest development
is Founuers Village, two miles to the north.
~L

23
