' Thirty-five potential volcanic locations in Douglas County have been mapped by the Colorado
Geological Survey; not all of them contain rhyolite. Of the 35 locations, only seven of them
' have potential economic value. Of these seven, two have been depleted, two have developments
built on them and one has developments surrounding the resource. Except for the Castle Rock
Quarry resource, the remaining rhyolite deposits would be too expensive to develop given their
' size, the cost of permitting, the cost of developing transportation access, and excessive
overburden removal. The existing CMI Ditmazs operation is the only remaining quarry
supplying rhyolite in Douglas County. The deposit will be completely depleted in 1996.
3.A.3 Demand for Rhyolite Aggregate
' Demand for rhyolite is tied to specific uses and cannot be equated to a per capita consumption as
other aggregates can. The historical demand for this product from the Ditmazs Quany is perhaps
the best and only basis for measuring the demand. Rhyolite is the only Douglas County source
of stone, coarse aggregate, crusher fines, and specification road base.
' In addition, demand for a variety of rock products is present, whether or not there is a coazse
aggregate source. Table-3.A.3(1) indicates product demands.

1
1

Table-3.A.3(1) -Product Demands
MATERIAL USAGE
6" Stone decorative stone, walls, building stone
12" Stone decorative stone, walls, building stone
18" Stone decorative stone, walls, building stone
24" Stone decorative stone, walls, building stone
36" Stone decorative stone, walls, building stone
3/4" Rock leach field rock, water line bedding material,
1 1/2" Rock leach field rock, water line bedding material,
Crusher Fines roadway surfacing, horse industry, bike paths
Class 6 Road Base roadway surfacing
Class 5 Road Base roadway surfacing
Fill Material horse industry, building backfill
Class 1 Structural Fill foundations, bridges
' 13
