Ms. Gabi Hoefler, Boulder <br />County Health Department, chaired the meeting. <br />Two encouraging items were accomplished during the meeting: (1) lines of <br />communication were re-established; (2) John Lohr, plant manager said that he would <br />prepare a layman's guide to the permit application. This guide is enclosed for <br />your examination. A second meeting is scheduled for 6 October. <br />Watchdogs position: <br />(1) We Need Alr Quality Monitoring Stations: <br />The lungs' constant interaction with the environment--the <br />air we breathe--makes the impact of that environment <br />inescapable. How well, or how poorly, our lungs pertorm <br />depends directly on the state of the air around us. <br />Lunq Disease Data 1997 American Lung Association p. 22. <br />The Longmont Station (3rd and Kimbark) is approximately 10 miles from Southdown, <br />and acx-i,rding to an official at the Boulder County Health Department, it is more than <br />likely that fugitive dust and PM 10 particulates will filter out before reaching the monitor <br />station in Longmont or Boulder City. The Watchdogs believe that these stations are <br />not sufficiently and adequately located to accurately determine the health risk to <br />portions of the community living closer to fugitive dust sources including PM 10. <br />The American Lung Association emphasized in a report, The Perils of Particulates. <br />The danger line has now been drawn at the PM 10 level, since these <br />partiCules are still small enough to be drawn deep into the tracheo- <br />bronchial region, the windpipe and the air passages within the lungs. <br />These particles are classified as inhalable. Excessive PM 10 levels are <br />"Protect what's cbsas Po your heart; your family, friends and your lungs." <br /> <br />
