Glossary and Acronyms <br />Chapter 7 <br />Glossary <br />affected environment - In the NEPA process, the <br />area that will be affected or created by the <br />alternatives under consideration. <br />airshed - A geographic area that shares the same <br />air. <br />all-terrain vehicle (ATV) - A motorized <br />recreational vehicle less than 50 inches in width and <br />with more than two wheels, such as a 3-wheeler or <br />4-wheeler. <br />biological assessment (BA) -Information prepared <br />by, or under the direction of, a Federal agency to <br />determine a Proposed Action is likely to affect <br />listed species or designated critical habitat. <br />biological evaluation (BE) - A documented USDA <br />Forest Service review to determine how an action <br />may affect any sensitive species. <br />buffer - An area of land between two separate and <br />distinct land use regimes, which can serve to <br />modify the effects of one land use on the other. <br />alluvial - Pertaining to material or processes <br />associated with transportation and deposition by <br />concentrated running water. <br />alluvial valley floor - An area of unconsolidated <br />stream-laid deposits holding streams with water <br />availability sufficient for subirrigation or flood <br />irrigation agricultural activities (see 30 CFR 701.5). <br />alluvium -Sediment deposited by water, including <br />gravel, sand, silt, and clay, in various mixtures. <br />alternative - In terms of the National <br />Environmental Policy Act, one of several substitute <br />or alternate proposals that a Federal agency is <br />considering in an environmental analysis. <br />ambient -Surrounding conditions (or environment) <br />in a given place and time. <br />angle of draw -The angle of inclination from the <br />edge of the workings and the edge of the subsidence <br />area. <br />aquatic -Living or growing in or on the water. <br />aquifer -A layer of permeable rock, sand, or gravel <br />that stores and transmits water in sufScien[ <br />quantities for a specific use. <br />best management practice (BMP) -One or more <br />practices designed to prevent or reduce pollution or <br />another negative effect on a resource. <br />big game -Large mammals, such as deer, that are <br />hunted for sport. <br />buffer zone -An area between two different land <br />uses that is intended to resist, absorb, or otherwise <br />preclude development or intrusion between the two <br />use areas. <br />candidate species -Plants and animals considered <br />for addition to the List of Endangered and <br />Threatened Species. <br />canopy -The part of any stand of trees represented <br />by the tree crowns. I[ usually refers [o the <br />uppermost layer of foliage, but it can be used to <br />describe lower layers in amulti-storied forest. <br />cavity - A hole in a tree, often used by wildlife <br />species for nesting or roosting. <br />clean coal -Coal which, when burned, emits less <br />than 1.2 pounds of sulfur dioxide per million Btu. <br />colluvial - Pertaining to material or processes <br />associated with transportation and/or deposition by <br />mass movement (gravitational action) and local, <br />unconcentrated runoff on side slopes and/or at the <br />base of slopes. <br />colluvium - Unconsolidated, unsorted earth <br />material being transported or deposited on side <br />slopes and/or at the base of slopes by mass <br />movement (e.g. direct gravitational action) and by <br />local, unconcentrated runoff. <br />concern level - In scenery management, the <br />measure of the degree of public importance placed <br />on landscapes as viewed from travelways and use <br />areas.
