The Bowdish soil is moderately deep and well Drained. It formed <br />In residuum derived dominantly from interbedded sandstone and shale. <br />typically, the surface layer is reddish brown loam 5 inches thick. <br />The upper part of the subsoil is reddish brown loam 7 inches thick. <br />fhe lower part is pinkish white gravelly loam 11 inches thick. Hard <br />sandstone ~s at 23 inches. In some areas the surface layer is fine <br />:sandy loam or sandy loam. <br />Permeability of the Bowdish soil is moderate. Available water <br />r:.apacity is low. Effective rooting depth is 20 to 40 inches. Runoff <br />is moderate, and the hazard of water erosion is high. <br />The Progresso soil is moderately deep and well drained. It formed <br />in alluvium derived dominantly from sandstone. Typically, the surface <br />layer is reddish brown loam 7 inches thick. The subsoil is reddish <br />brown clay loam 17 inches thick. The substratum ~s white sandy loam <br />l2 inches thick. Hard sandstone is at a depth of 36 inches. In some <br />areas the surface layer is fine sandy loam. <br />Permeability of the Progresso soil is moderately slow. Available <br />water capacity ~s low. Effective rooting depth is 20 to 40 inches. <br />Runoff is moderate, and the hazard of water erosion is high. <br />This unit is used for livestock grazing and wildlife habitat. <br />The potential plant community on the Pinon and Bowdish soils is <br />pinyon pine and Utah juniper, with an understory of Indian ricegrass, <br />~nuttongrass, and Gambel oak. The average annual production of air-dry <br />understory vegetation is about 300 to 800 pounds per acre. <br />~~U <br />
