12/88 <br />75--Pinon-Bowdish-Progresso loams, cool, 1 to 12 percent slopes. <br />This map unit is on mesa tops and ridges. The native vegetation ~s <br />mainly pinyon pine, Utah juniper, grasses and shrub. Elevation is <br />6,800 to 7,400 feet. The average annual precipitation is 13 to 15 <br />inches, the average annual air temperature is 45 to 47 degrees F, and <br />the average frost-free period is 90 to 120 days. <br />this unit is 35 percent Pinon loam, 30 percent Bowdish loam, and <br />20 percent Progresso loam. The Pinon and Bowdish soils are under <br />pinyon-juniper, and the Progresso soil is under grasses and sagebr~,sh. <br />The components of this unit are so intricately intermingled that it <br />~.~as not practical to map them separately at the scale used. <br />Included in this unit is about 10 percent Rock outcrop, and S <br />percent soils that are similar to this Pinon soil but have greater <br />than 35 percent rock fragments in the control section. Also included <br />.are small areas of Monogram soils. <br />The Pinon soil is shallow and well drained. It formed in residuum <br />derived dominantly from interbedded sandstone and shale. Typically, <br />the surface layer is brown loam 5 inches thick. The underlying <br />material is pinkish white loam to a depth of 16 inches. Hard <br />sandstone is at a depth of 16 inches. In some areas the surface layer <br />~s gravelly loam. <br />Permeability of the Pinon soil is moderate. Available water <br />capacity is vary low. Effective rooting depth is 10 to 20 inches. <br />Runoff is moderate, and the hazard of water erosion is high. <br />-~-/ 3 <br />
