The
average annual precipitation is 12 to 14 inches, the average annual
air temperature is 45 to 48 degrees F, and the average frost-free
season is 110 to 130 days.
These soils are loamy, mixed, mesic Lithic Ustollic Calciorthids.
Typical pedon of Pinon loam, in an area of Pinon-Bowdish-Rock
outcrop complex, 3 to 30 percent slopes, about 400 feet west and 2,400
feet north of the southeast corner of Sec. 12, T. 48 N., R. 18 W.
A--O to 5 inches; brown (7.SYR 5/4) loam, dark brown (7.SYR 4/4)
moist; weak fine granular structure; soft, very friable, slightly
sticky and slightly plastic; strongly effervescent; mildly alkaline:
clear smooth boundary.
Bk--S to 16 inches; pinkish white (7.5YR 8/2) loam; light brown
(7.SYR 6/4) moist; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; slightly
hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; 40 percent
calcium carbonate equivalent; violently effervescent; moderately
alkaline; abrupt smooth boundary.
R--16 inches; hard sandstone and interbedded shale.
The particle size control section is sandy clay loam or loam.
Clay content is 18 to 27 percent.
A horizon: Rock fragment content is 0 to 10 percent ,
predominantly gravel sized.
