The Progresso soil is moderately deep and well drained. It formed
in alluvium derived dominantly from sandstone, Typically, the sur~a~-?
layer is reddish brown loam 7 inches thick. The subsoil .s reddish
brown clay loam 17 inches thick. The substratum is white sandy loam
12 inches thick. Hard sandstone is at a depth of 36 inches, In s,me
areas the surface layer is fine sandy loam,
Permeability of the Progresso soil is moderate. Available water
capacity is moderate. Effective rooting depth is 20 to 40 inches.
Runoff is rapid, and the hazard of water erosion is high.
This unit is used for livestock grazing in spring and fall and
wildlife habitat.
The potential plant community on the Barx Soil is.meinly western
wheatgrass, Sandberg bluegrass, Wyoming big sagebrush, and
needleandthread. The average annual production of air-dry vegetation
is about 850 bounds per acre.
The potential plant community on the Progresso soil is mainly
galleta, big sagebrush, and needleandthread. The average annual
production of air-dry vegetation is about 600 pounds per acre.
If the condition of the rang• deteriorates, broom snakeweed,
Fandler threeawn, chsatgrass, and annual sunflowers increase. Where
the range is in poor condition, tfies• plants ar• dominant. Grazing
should be managed so that the desirable balane• of epeeies is
maintained in th• plant community.
If th• rang• vegetation is seriously deteriorated, seeding is
needed. For successful.seedings, a seedbed shduld b• prepared and the
seeds drilled. Th• plants selected for seeding should meet th•
seasonal reduirements of livestock or wildlife, or both.
'Zo
